Orbera – Balloons for Weight Loss
More than two thirds of American adults are overweight or obese, according to the latest National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. That’s a troubling statistic considering excessive body fat is associated with a host of life-altering medical conditions, from sleep apnea and diabetes to increased risk for stroke and some cancers. But being overweight is not just unhealthy; it’s hard.
It’s hard on your joints and body, hard on your emotional well-being, and hard to beat. It’s not easy to lose weight and keep it off. But fortunately, Roper St. Francis has all sorts of programs to help, including the latest non-surgical technique called Orbera.
Orbera is a managed weight loss system that includes having a soft silicon balloon temporarily placed in your stomach so you feel fuller and eat less. The balloon is inserted via your mouth, under mild sedation, so it can be done on an outpatient basis. After the balloon is placed, weight loss with Orbera can be rapid, often within the first three months of treatment. But we also help our patients in the follow-up phase, because the key to success with Orbera is changing your eating habits so you eat less and eat healthier foods even after the balloon is removed.
To see if Orbera may be right for you, talk with your doctor. Successful candidates do have to meet the following qualifications:
- Be an adult
- Must have a body mass index of 30 to 40
- Must be willing and able to participate and comply with a medically supervised program
- Also, Orbera is not covered by health insurance, so candidates must either qualify for financing options or be able to pay for the $7,000 cost of the procedure and 12 months of coaching and support that are part of the overall Orbera treatment plan.
