Prone to Depression? Prioritize Exercise.

Crackling fires and cozy comforters may be calling this season, but a 2019 study published in the journal Depression and Anxiety underscores that regular physical activity can significantly reduce your risk for depression and depressed moods—even if you are predisposed to the condition.


  1. Researchers analyzed health and lifestyle data from close to 8,000 people collected over two years.
  2. They found four hours of exercise per week reduced participants’ risk for a depressive episode by 17 percent. Both high-intensity exercise and low-intensity activity had these beneficial effects.
  3. Researchers found that specifically, 35 minutes of physical activity a day seemed to reduce people’s risk for depression—even if they have experienced the condition prior to the study.
