Mark Dickson, Vice President of Mission for Roper St. Francis Healthcare pays honor to this special day.

“Sunrise in the morning, let all creation greet the dawn, and praise the Lord who created Brother Sun to open our eyes.
For all of us would be blind, if not for the light of our Lord.”

– St. Francis of Assisi, from the Canticle of Brother Sun, Sister Moon

Today, Oct. 4, is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, the date of his death and entrance into heaven over 800 years ago.

A favorite saint of many, he is known for his witness to peace, justice and ecology. In healthcare today there is a growing awareness and call to action to see the connections we have with environmental justice, stewardship of creation, the spirituality of nature and care for all life on our planet.

At Roper St. Francis Healthcare we have deep connections to these themes and values through our local affiliations, founding member of Bon Secours Mercy Health and also the Catholic Health Association. In recent years we have lowered our use of unnecessary chemicals and water; increased energy efficiency and increased sustainability of our materials and facilities. Much work remains to be done, yet we are aligning ourselves with best practices for our transformative future!

In the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi, let us reflect and take action to respond to the needs and cry of the earth and all peoples by living our Values of Compassion, Stewardship, Human Dignity, Integrity and Service. Please take a few minutes to view this video from Sr. Mary Haddad, RSM, CEO of the Catholic Health Association.

Thank you for your service and shared ministry!
