Being a mom requires a whole purse full of skills. We all know the look she gives when you’re acting up will quickly set you straight, and that her kisses are magic to heal almost any kind of ache. And, while the research has yet to confirm their existence, somehow, she has eyes in the back of her head.

There are some skills that come with the job, others are earned like the medals on the chest of a battle-tested soldier. Whether you’re prepping your first nursery, excited to be a grandma, or need a refresher on diapering, Roper St. Francis Healthcare can help.

Thinking about becoming a mom?

Maybe Baby? What to Know Before You Get Pregnant
Know what to expect before you are expecting! Our OB/GYNs will discuss how to prepare your body for pregnancy and provide information on genetic screenings and serious issues such as the Zika virus. Free.

For expecting moms

Free Mobile Learning – My RSFH Baby app and eBooks
We are pleased to offer a free mobile pregnancy app to support you throughout your pregnancy and beyond. From the app and our website (www.rsfh.com/childbirth), you can also link to our three eBooks (Childbirth Preparation, Breastfeeding and A New Beginning) to help you prepare for the arrival of your little one. Available 24/7 for your convenience!

Infant CPR
Would you know what to do in an emergency? The ability to perform CPR and/or remove a choking hazard could mean the difference between life and death. This one-hour class teaches CPR skills to new parents, grandparents and siblings, as well as how to respond if infants choke on food or other objects. $25 per two attendees.

Financial Checklist for New Parents
This one-hour session will help expectant parents and couples who are thinking about starting a family learn how to manage the financial changes that come with having a new baby. Topics addressed: managing the expenses of a newborn, insurance, wills and savings. Free.

Not-my-first-rodeo moms

New Baby (Not New Parents) Tour
Not your first baby but still new to our hospital? Take a tour of the maternity suite and get answers to your questions about what to pack, admission procedures, your stay and more. Registration includes two adults (no children, please!). Not recommended for first time parents. Free.

Safe Sitter
This 7½-hour program teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to handle emergencies when caring for children, safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills and appropriate responses to medical emergencies. $75 per student covers backpack, class manual, “Important Information” notepad and lunch.

Pets, New Babies and Children
Already have a pet or considering adding one to your family? Attend an informal presentation by a local veterinarian for the basics on how to help your pet adjust to having a new baby in the family, as well as what you need to know when considering getting a pet for your children. Free.

Grandmoms-to-be

Grandbaby! A Refresher for Grandparents
This refresher class for grandparents includes a tour of our maternity area and is taught by registered nurses to help you understand recent changes in childbirth and early infant care. We cover what to expect in the hospital, baby care and feeding, infant safety, and how you can support the new parents. $15 per two adults.
