In less than six years, Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital has become a vital part of one of South Carolina’s fastest-growing communities.

Now, we’re expanding in all the right directions — growing our footprint, adding to our team and enhancing the services we offer to meet the needs of our neighbors. Our initiatives to optimize our footprint, modernize technology and address future clinical needs as part of the Roper St. Francis Healthcare 2030 Strategic Plan are coming to life.
Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital’s expansion will double the hospital’s size from 50 to 100 beds and add more than 200,000 square feet of new or renovated space. Scheduled for full completion by spring 2026, the expansion will allow us to serve more patients, reduce wait times and offer advanced care in more specialties.

And while this construction is underway, it’s important to know that we’re still fully operational. Every service we offer — including labor and delivery, the emergency room, imaging, pharmacy, surgery and inpatient care — is open and caring for patients without interruption.
Highlights of the expansion include:
- Labor and delivery: Expanding and renovating a labor and delivery unit, featuring six delivery rooms, 20 postpartum rooms and plans to elevate to a Level II nursery
- Gregory M. Parker Emergency Department: Expanding from 14 to 35 bays to treat more patients faster and more comfortably.
- Operating rooms: Supporting higher surgical volumes in orthopedics, general surgery, neurosurgery and more
- Inpatient dialysis: Providing essential care under one roof, reducing the need for patient transfers
- Cardiovascular services: Enhancing cardiovascular inpatient services, including diagnostics, and introducing cardiac rehabilitation services
- Medical office building updates: Relocating mammography, adding wound care and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and establishing a dedicated neurology presence
“We’re literally doubling almost everything — beds, space, ER capacity, staffing — and we’re doing it all without interrupting care,” said Patrick Bosse, chief administrative officer of Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital. “That’s something we’re very proud of.”
Built by and for the community

If there’s one thing that makes Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital stand apart, it’s the people. The hospital’s culture is one of pride, connection and genuine joy in serving others. Many of our teammates live in Summerville, Moncks Corner, Goose Creek and surrounding areas. They aren’t just employees — they’re your neighbors, your child’s teacher’s spouse, your friend from church.
“It really does feel like a family here,” Bosse said. “We always say we’re small enough that you can’t run from anyone — you’ve got to be kind. You feel that when you walk our halls.”
That culture has powered the hospital through the significant construction project. With crews working on nearly every side of the building, the hospital has continued delivering high-quality care without disruption, advancing the Roper St. Francis Healthcare mission of healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence. Teams have adapted, supported one another and taken pride in building something that will serve the Lowcountry for decades to come.
A future that’s closer than you think
And even before construction is complete, the heart of what makes Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital special is already here: a dedicated team, a proud community and a vision of care that puts people first. We’re not just building more space; we’re building for tomorrow.
