Berkeley’s mammography team recently demonstrated what it truly means to care for people, not just patients.

A patient arrived for her mammogram carrying more than medical concerns. She was facing housing instability and financial hardship, having spent the night in her car with her child while trying to secure the final funds needed to move into a rental. Embarrassed by her circumstances, she apologized to the team for her situation. Instead of judgment, she was met with compassion.

After listening to her story, members of the Mammography Team quietly came together, pooling cash and offering gift cards to help cover immediate needs, including a required utility deposit and groceries.

The patient was overwhelmed with gratitude and moved to tears by the kindness she experienced during an incredibly vulnerable moment. What could have been one of her most difficult days became a powerful reminder that she was not alone.

Their selfless response reflects our culture and our mission of healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence.

For this extraordinary act of humanity, the team was recognized with an Excellence in Action award. This award is given by leaders to teammates who demonstrate excellence on the job through exceptional patient care, outstanding teamwork and actions that reflect our mission and values.
