Kim’s Baby Came 12 Weeks Early

Kim Jamison’s eight-year-old son Alex knew something was wrong with his mom that morning. “I was disoriented and mumbling. I was also 28 weeks pregnant,” recalls Kim. Alex called 911 and she was rushed to the hospital where she was diagnosed with severe, sudden preeclampsia. Her baby girl was delivered by emergency cesarean-section and then Kim was sent to the ICU.

“I was in a hospital bed for five weeks. By the time I was ready for discharge my muscles had deteriorated to the point where I was unable to walk, lift my arm or even sit up in bed by myself,” she said.

Kim went to the Roper Rehabilitation Hospital for help in regaining her strength. “It was really hard being away from my baby, but the staff was amazing. They kept me focused on getting well so I could get back to my baby as soon as possible.”

Understanding how difficult Kim’s situation was, the staff went above and beyond for her. “They threw a surprise baby shower for me. I couldn’t believe it when I walked into the room, there were decorations, lunch and gifts. Everyone was so nice.”

The recreational therapy staff also incorporated visits to see her baby at another hospital’s Neonatal ICU into her recreational therapy. Today, Kim has regained her strength and is enjoying caring for her baby.

“The people at the Roper Rehabilitation Hospital were all wonderful. It was the best experience I could have had under those circumstances,” says Kim.
